The most useful information in a slideway liner quote is not only the machine model. It is a measured cut list showing each bonded surface, the amount of wear, the required width and the thickness allowance for final machining. This inspection workflow helps rebuilders prepare that information before choosing a slideway liner size.
Start with the machine geometry
- Record the machine type, axis and part being relined: saddle, table, knee, gib, quill or guide pad.
- Mark the fixed datum surfaces and the surfaces that will receive liner.
- Measure the working length and width of every liner position rather than estimating from the overall casting.
- Note oil grooves, relief pockets, fasteners and edge clearances that change the usable bonding area.
Measure wear and thickness allowance
Measure the worn surface against a known datum using the method appropriate to your machine shop: precision straightedge and feeler gauges, indicator readings, CMM data or a machining inspection report. Separate the measured wear from the final scraping or grinding allowance. The selected liner thickness must restore the geometry after bonding and leave enough material for finishing; do not select thickness from color alone.
| Measurement | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Machine and axis | Example: knee mill table way | Identifies the application and datum |
| Finished liner length | mm | Sets the cut length |
| Finished liner width | mm | Confirms the stock width or custom cut |
| Measured wear | mm at datum points | Separates geometry repair from material choice |
| Target final thickness | mm after finishing | Prevents excess saddle or table height |
| Quantity | number of identical strips | Controls total material and cut layout |
Check the mating part and gib adjustment
A liner can be the correct nominal thickness and still create a fit problem if the mating gib, dovetail or opposing way is not inspected. Check the available gib adjustment, the remaining contact width and the final center height or axis relationship. Include these findings in the inquiry so the supplier can recommend a practical thickness and finishing allowance.
Prepare a supplier-ready cut list
- Use one row per liner piece and keep length, width, thickness, color and quantity in separate columns.
- Add a drawing or marked photograph showing orientation and the etched bonding side.
- State whether the material should be supplied as a roll, sheet or pre-cut strip.
- If the project needs bonding materials, include two-part epoxy adhesive in the same request.
Have measurements but need a thickness check?
Send the cut list, drawing or marked photo with your machine type. We can confirm the suitable liner format and quote the required material.
