How to Install Turcite B — Bonding Slideway Liner to Machine Ways

Step-by-step procedure for bonding TEBAK SLIDEWAY (Turcite B replacement) liner to steel or cast iron machine tool ways: surface prep, adhesive application, clamping and finish machining.

Slideway liner is supplied with one side chemically etched to accept epoxy adhesive. Successful installation is about surface preparation and even clamping pressure — take your time on these two steps and the result will be flat, stable and long-lasting.

Tools and materials you will need

  • TEBAK SLIDEWAY liner (correct width and thickness)
  • Two-part epoxy adhesive for slideway liner bonding
  • Clean cloths and degreaser (acetone or similar)
  • Scraper or fine abrasive for surface prep
  • Clamps or weighted plates for even pressure
  • Milling machine, grinder or scraping tools for finishing

Step 1 — Prepare the metal surface

The steel or cast iron counterface must be clean, dry and free of oil, coolant residue and loose scale. Degrease thoroughly, then create a suitable roughness for the adhesive — a light abrasive treatment or scrape improves bond strength. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's surface preparation instructions.

Step 2 — Cut the liner to size

Cut the liner slightly oversize with the etched side identified. PTFE-based material cuts cleanly with a sharp knife or fine saw. Leave a small allowance so the finished piece can be trimmed or machined to final dimension after bonding.

Step 3 — Apply adhesive and bond

Mix the two-part epoxy adhesive according to the manufacturer's ratio and pot life. Apply a uniform, thin coat to the etched side of the liner (and optionally to the metal surface). Position the liner and apply even clamping pressure across the full area — uneven pressure produces air pockets and weak spots.

Step 4 — Cure

Hold the assembly clamped for the full cure time specified by the adhesive manufacturer. Do not rush this stage — moving the machine too early will shift the liner and ruin the bond.

Step 5 — Finish machine to tolerance

After curing, finish the liner by milling, grinding or scraping to the required tolerance. Final scraping restores the bearing surface grade and, if you are re-lining a machine that is scraped, a scraping paste is used to mark high spots during this stage.
